Toledo's Historic Farmers' Market chronicles the inception of the market and documents its path to the present. The historical portion is only about sixty pages but is very readable and includes write-ups on some of the longtime vendors of the market. At 172 total pages, the book includes other interesting information. For instance, a large section of the book is devoted to recipes that were contributed by market farmers and their families. Some of the recipes sound amazing. A few include: coffee butter cream frosting, apple butter frosting, strawberry bread, zucchini spinach soup, and rhubarb brown betty. The book also includes a listing of Ohio fruits and vegetables and their typical harvest time. There is a brief section entitled "Visiting the Toledo Farmers' Market" that functions as a dos and don'ts guide. For example, take cash, don't block aisles, and avoid the temptation to dig fingernails into ears of corn.
Through photos and stories, the author shows how the Toledo Farmers' Market has become an institution. It's a casual place where people from all walks of life mingle. It's where you find fresh green beans, peppers, carrots, mushrooms, onions, potatoes and cucumbers and a host of other vegetables. If it's a fall day, you'll be able to find some vendors selling hot chocolate and coffee and the orchards that bring apples and cider. If you have a party coming up, be sure to visit the salsa makers. After all the purchases, you might as well take home a freshly made brownie, cupcake, or truffle. Did you forget to buy something for a friend's birthday? Stop by and pick up some hand-made glass beaded earrings, candles or soaps.
Of course, at the market, it's not just about the produce and pretty items you can take home with you.
